Moving utility checklist

Three to four weeks before

Getting ahead here avoids the two problems everyone hits: no power on move-in day and a two-week wait for an internet install.

• Confirm which providers serve your new address
• Schedule electricity service to start the day before you move in
• Book the internet installation window, ideally on or before move-in day
• Give notice at your current address for the day after you leave

The week of the move

Small confirmations prevent big headaches.

• Reconfirm the install appointment and who needs to be home
• Take final meter readings at your old address
• Update your billing address and autopay details
• Return any leased equipment to your old provider and keep the receipt

After you move in

Check your first bill against what you were quoted. If something does not match, it is far easier to correct in the first billing cycle than six months later.
